According to the WI’s new music professor, Dominique Royem, generations of composers have been inspired by Mother Nature in all of her forms. She relates, “Written in tandem with the 5th Symphony, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 ‘Pastoral’ is a masterpiece of nature in music. Beethoven captures the countryside of his beloved Vienna from the bird calls to the summer thunderstorm. The work sets a standard for depicting the natural world that other composers have been following since 1808, lightning and all.” In her upcoming class, conductor Royem, will be examining a wide range of masterpieces created in honor and fear of the natural world.
